I have always been interested in women’s health and lifestyle stories because they are stories that are applicable to my own life. When I scan a magazine rack, my eyes are drawn to magazines that give tips and advice on fitness, diet, and style. (My favorites include SELF Magazine and Women’s Heath Magazine.) It would be a dream of mine to one day work in a magazine like one of these, so this beat will focus on the writers and bloggers who devote their time to reporting on the trends and happenings of women’s health and lifestyle.
1. Jennifer Nelson: Freelance Health and Lifestyle Writer
Jennifer Nelson is a freelance writer, hailing from Florida, who has contributed hundreds of articles for well-known women’s health and lifestyle magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Woman’s Day. She has also written a book about the world of women’s magazines titled Airbrushed Nation: The Lure and Loathing of Women’s Magazines.
Her stories focus on making complicated health and wellness information accessible to everyday readers. Some of her articles include:
2. Lucy Danziger: Editor-in-Chief of SELF Magazine
Along with holding my dream job as editor of SELF Magazine, Lucy Danziger is also author of the bestselling book The Drop 10 Diet and co-author of The Nine Rooms of Happiness, both of which focus on women’s health and well-being. She writes a blog on Yahoo! Health called Happier, Healthier You, which offers advice and inspiration on health and fitness topics. Her writing makes the overwhelming amount of information about exercise, diet and well-being seem realistic to attain in a busy life.
Some of my favorite posts include:
3. Gina Roberts-Grey: Freelance Writer and Columnist
Gina Roberts-Grey covers many topics in journalism, such as financial and consumer issues, but she is very well known for her health features that have appeared in publications such as Glamour magazine and Redbook magazine. Her articles are well-informed because she interviews leading health experts and several celebrities on their health and wellness tips. She is also a celebrity blogger on Yahoo! Health and Celebrity Health Minute.
Tara Parker-Pope works as a columnist for the New York Times, covering various health topics for her blog on the website called Well. She has written articles for the Wall Street Journal, as well as lifestyle books such as The Hormone Decision. Her articles often relate to her own life, which gives a personal touch to the subject, such as this one.
