The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, released the list of nominees on January 10 and there has been a lot of speculation on who will win ever since. From the Huffington Post to the people of the Gateway Mall in Springfield, Ore. it seems that most everyone has a prediction of who will win the coveted awards this year.
Linda Birkby, a resident of the Springfield area, was leaving the movie theater on Wednesday night after seeing Lincoln, one of the nine films nominated for Best Picture when she said, “Lincoln should win.” She noted that, “Silver Linings Playbook would be my second choice for Best Picture.”
Tim Thayer, an employee at Sears in the Gateway Mall, also agreed that Lincoln deserved to win and was more confident than Birkby in his predictions by saying that it will win.
Thayer also added that Lincoln is a great film and said, “If you like politics, you’ll like this movie.”
The nine films nominated for best picture are Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty.
Best picture is only one of 24 categories that are included in the Oscars. Other categories include Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Score, Best Director, and many others.
Moviegoer, Cheri Myseth, was on her way to see a special showing of Saturday Night Fever with a friend when she gave her prediction for the Best Actor category. “I’m sure it will be the guy from Les Mis! He was awesome!” referring to Hugh Jackman who played the lead role of Jean Valjean in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Les Miserables.
Birkby also gave her opinion on a few categories and said, “Daniel Day-Lewis and Anne Hathaway will win Best Actor and Actress.” Day-Lewis was the lead role in Lincoln and Hathaway played the role of Fantine in Les Miserables.
Other nominees in the category for Best Actor include Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook, Joaquin Phoenix for The Master, and Denzel Washington for Flight. Nominees for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category include Amy Adams for The Master, Sally Field for Lincoln, Helen Hunt for The Sessions, and Jacki Weaver for Silver Linings Playbook.
Myseth also noted that she tries to watch the awards ceremony every year and that she is, “trying to watch all the movies,” before the show airs later this month.
This year the show will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane and broadcast live on ABC on Sunday, February 24, at 7PM EST.
