Neighborhood News #3: Landing Page Assignment

Neighborhood News Assignment #3

 Landing Page

Your assignment is to create a WordPress post on our class site that could serve as a “landing page” for your neighborhood.

That is, if someone Googles or Bings “River Road” and finds your group’s post, the searcher will be able to learn nearly every government agency, park, school, business, nonprofit or other (legal, linkable) service available in that neighborhood. (Also, think about child care, houses of worship, places to enjoy music or art, bike repair shops, community gardens, shooting ranges, etc.)

You will only create one post per group, but everyone in the group should contribute to the post (it’s possible to edit other people’s drafts – do that until your group is finished and ready to publish, taking care not to edit at the same time as someone else in the group).

You will also each write a 100-word expansion of any of the government services or nonprofit services available in the neighborhood, or more about one of the schools or the parks. That 100-word expansion belongs on the same post, just underneath whatever service it is that you’re writing about. For example:

FOOD for Lane County Dining Room (Always link when you can!)

Located downtown on 8th Ave., across the street from the WestTown apartments and across the parking lot from a state liquor store, the FOOD for Lane County Dining Room provides dinners for those who either don’t have a home or don’t have enough money to pay for their own meals. It’s open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Those wanting a meal should simply show up; those wanting to donate food or volunteer to create a hot meal should contact Sheyla Norte at 541-242-2822 or volunteer at foodforlanecounty dot org – SS (initials to show who did the work)

(No, no one can use FOOD for Lane County Dining Room as your story, though yes, Downtown, you can put this on your landing page if you so desire.)

The due date for the landing page is Sunday, April 22, at 7 p.m. – that is, the finished landing page should be live by that point on the Reporting1Blog, with appropriate images, links and tags (all of your names should be tags, not just the name of the person hosting the landing page).
