Cal Young Neighborhood is home to Oakway Mall, the Eugene Country Club, several schools, Sheldon Community Center, many churches, and most importantly a collection of people that love to live there.
The beautiful green grass and iconic Oregon trees are a big plus for some members of the community. Sally Stender, a senior at Sheldon High School, said she likes “How much space there is. There’s parks close and stuff.” Stender is just one of the approximately 1500 students who attend the local high school, home of The Fighting Irish.
This high school’s mission, according to their website, “is to provide students a challenging, comprehensive education enabling them to function as responsible citizens and to adapt to a changing world.” Education is a high priority in this neighborhood, which is pretty common in most Eugene neighborhoods.
Cal Young’s proximity to the University of Oregon is considered a big plus as well and contributes to this prioritization of educating its citizens. Julia Girod, from the high school’s finance department, said one of the things she appreciates the most about the neighborhood is, “Proximity.” What is her least favorite thing about the community? “The traffic on Delta Highway,” she said matter-of-factly.
Gil James stated that his roots in the Cal Young neighborhood go back to 1946. “I met Cal Young,” he said with a smile.
“It’s nice to have young people influencing our community because honestly, you’re the future,” James said. “We’re lucky to have the University of Oregon around.”
