One of the most anticipated reveals of the new year for music fans are summer festival lineups. Hundreds on thousands of concert junkies spend hours scourging the internet for leaks of appearing bands and discounted tickets to their favorite venues. To cut down on that time skimming through Google results, I’ll be following five of the top music festivals on the West Coast (plus one Central!) and keeping up-to-date with changes and announcements as they trickle in. Let’s jam!
South By Southwest (SXSW): March 9 – 18, 2012; Austin, TX.
Quickly becoming one of the most talked-about festivals in the US, SXSW not only profiles an extensive list of musicians but also features film and new advances in technology. Starting March 9, goers can explore various venues in Austin to watch a mix of new movies, interact with the coolest gadgets and enjoy the ongoing energy of the city. Music performances start the 13th and continue on until the end of the week.

Coachella: April 13 – 15 and April 20 – 22, Indio, CA.
Certainly one of the most recognizable names in music festivals is Southern California’s Coachella. Big names like Paul McCartney, Death Cab for Cutie, and Radiohead have all graced the stages in Indio and thousands of fans commit to three days of dessert heat to be present at this incomparable weekend event. Coachella has grown so much that it now encompasses two separate weekends in the month of April. The recently released lineup has fans giddy and competitive to get ahold of weekend passes.
Sasquatch: May 25 – 28, The Gorge, WA.
Secluded alongside the Columbia River, The Gorge has been voted Best Outdoor Music Venues nine times running by Pollstar Magazine. And rightly so. The main stage sits at the forefront of a breathtaking view of the river, creating a full sensory music experience for ‘squatchers. 2011 marked Sasquatch’s decision to extend the festival, making the Memorial Day weekend event a full four days. Spectacular views, onsite camping, and lineups comparable to Coachella allot Sasquatch two thumbs up in summer festivals.

Outside Lands: Summer 2012 (official dates TBA), San Francisco, CA.
Displayed in the heart of Golden Gate Park, this San Francisco festival draws in fans from up and down the West coast. Outside Lands promotes food, wine, art, and most of all, music. Fans find themselves in the center of the forest amongst sculptures of art as they make their way from stage to stage. The 2012 dates and lineup are yet to be announced, but experienced Outside Landers anticipate an impressive year for the Bay Area festival.
Bumbershoot: September 1 – 3, Seattle, WA.
This music and arts festival in the Pacific Northwest will celebrate its 41st birthday this coming Labor Day weekend. Over 100,000 fans attend Bumbershoot each year to support all facets of the arts, including dance, visual arts, and film. After a lineup history that includes Bob Dylan, Modest Mouse, and Beck the stage presence for 2012 is certain to be a satisfying one.
