Despite being referred to as trashy, interesting, controversial, or entertaining, the blog, Perezhilton.com, is an Internet hit. Hilton’s main focus in his posts is the gossip surrounding celebrities, actors, and musicians. Whether it is from the multiple affairs of Tiger Woods or the tragic death of Michael Jackson, Hilton always seems to be one of the first to break the news. The blog and Hilton have received much complaint and controversy, such as “outing” gay celebrities.
I was reluctant at first to write about this website because it can be look at as rather immature or pointless, but beneath the surface I think this blog is a representation of how someone can achieve success through a blog. Even though it may be unfortunate or sad that someone can make a living off of the mistakes, embarrassment, and careers of people, it is reality in today’s society. It would probably be better if people focused their attention on more news worthy stories, but the only person to blame for the success of Perezhilton.com and others alike is ourselves. We are the ones that decide to visit his site or spend the money on tabloid magazines.
I started to think about this site as a representation of how a blog could be successful after reading the article in class about community organizing in journalism by Robert Niles. Even if Perez Hilton isn’t particularly well liked by many people, it can be said he has mastered the act of community organizer. He has found a niche that thousands of people are interested in, for whatever reason, and is constantly delivering the news they want to read. He has successfully started his own blog by embracing the need to be able to provide all aspects, such as written content, images, and advertising. Maybe he isn’t the best example of a community organizer, but there is no doubt he has found a way to be successful through the use of the Internet and the desire of others.
