Although Goodpasture Island only has one school located nearby, it’s a school with a lot of history. Marist High School started out as a small room in an old elementary school, and its first freshman class enrolled in 1918 with seven women graduating in 1922. The actual school was constructed in 1967. Marist High School is a Catholic school that has an estimated 512 students enrolled, according to their website. For those with younger children, there is also a Playdates Child Care Center, which offers both part-time and full-time care.

Delta Ponds is one of Eugene’s most expansive wildlife areas. It was recently reconnected with the Willamette River and is “a favorite spot for bird watching, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors.” It has also undergone other efforts to get rid of invasive species of plants and animals.

Located nearby the Ponds is the Valley River Fire Station, which is one of 11 fire stations located in Eugene. It is right near the Delta Highway, where a majority of the accidents they cover occur.

Most of the resources located in Goodpasture Island are a variety of private businesses. There are several health clinics available, including Brite Smile Whitening Professional, Pacific Medical Center and Lifetime Eye Care. There are multiple office buildings in the area that house investment and mortgage companies, like Edward Jones Investments and Paramount Mortgage Company, as well as law offices like the law office of Jeffrey S. Salisbury. Most of these companies are located in plazas and office buildings, such as the Village Plaza Office Building.

One advantage to living in Goodpasture Island its proximity to several shopping centers, most notably Valley River Center. This is one of two malls located in Eugene, and is a popular destination place for many people. In addition to having of stores, such as Sports Authority, JC Penny, Macy’s, etc., one of three movie theaters in Eugene. They also have a variety of partnerships with various charities and non-profit groups, including Relay for Life, Sacred Heart Medical Center and The Giving Tree. The mall also has a variety of amenities so everyone can enjoy their stay, such as electric scooters, lost & found, safety escorts and wheelchair service. There is also the Delta Oaks Shopping Center, which s located right off the Delta Highway. Notable stores located there are Dick’s Sporting Goods, Market of Choice and Wal-Mart.

However, Goodpasture Island is most well-known for its abundance of apartment complexes and housing areas. There is the Boulders on the River Apartment Complex (which runs right across from the Willamette River), Creekside Village, River Terrace Apartments, Glenbrook Apartments and many others.

Down the street from Eugene’s favorite Southern comfort food cuisine, Papa’s Soul Food, Scobert Gardens’s open space and green grasses welcome kids, adults, and pets alike. Countless hours of volunteer work and under $30,000 of Community Development Block Grant funds went towards the construction of Scobert Gardens Park in 1983. This park features botanical gardens, climbers, fixed benches, lighting, and a play structure. Scobert Gardens is Eugene’s first playground with an entirely rubberized safety surface to cushion the falls of the neighborhood children. This park is both cost-effective and low-maintenance in it’s structure and uses materials that are safer than what is found in most other playgrounds.

If you’re ever in need of a grassy knoll for a midday picnic or want to bask in the sunshine while reading your favorite novel, Scobert Gardens has the sights and means for a perfect afternoon in the park.

Scobert Gardens: Located on West 4th Avenue and Blair Street, this park features a botanical garden, a play structure and benches for community members to enjoy. This playground is Eugene’s first play structure with a fully rubberized surface.

St. John the Wonderworker, Serbian Orthodox Church: One of the most intriguing structures of the Whiteaker community is this church on Blair Street, just past 3rd Avenue. Main services take place at 9 am on Sundays, with various services throughout the week.

Aside from a PeaceHealth Wellness clinic available to 4J employees and their families, a person would be hard-pressed to find typical health services in the Whiteaker neighborhood. There are however, an abundance of alternative health services to be found.

Virginia A. Oram, a licensed naturopathic physician, has her practice set up in the heart of the historic Whiteaker shopping district on Blair and 3^rd.

Naturopathic practitioners can also be found several blocks east on 3^rd Avenue at A Healing Space. In addition to naturopathy this clinic offers chiropractic services, acupuncture, massage therapy, frequency specific microcurrent therapy, flower essence therapy, pranic healing and mental field therapy.

Whiteaker parents have several options for keeping their children active. All That! Dance Company offers classes for all ages in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and ballroom. Leung Marital Arts Academy teaches traditional Chinese martial arts and The Oregon Ki Society teaches traditional Japanese martial arts.

Nearby at 4^th and Washington, Eugenians at risk of homelessness or suffering from mental illness or brain injuries can get help at ShelterCare. This volunteer-run non-profit offers emergency shelter, transitional housing services, long-term supported housing and aid in obtaining food, clothing and household supplies.

People struggling with drug addiction can turn to two places in the Whiteaker. The Women’s and Children’s Center on Cheshire Avenue in the Owen Rose Garden district and Buckley Detoxification on 4^th and Jefferson provide vital support in a community plagued with drug abuse.

The Reality Kitchen , located at 245 Van Buren Street,  provides Whiteaker neighbors with “academically-based services and programs designed to nourish all learners, with and without disabilities, to grow personally, professionally, and imaginatively.”

Upstart Crow Studios is a non-profit performing arts organization geared toward youth. Found at 855 W. 1st Avenue, Upstart provides classes, camps, workshops and performances!

Education

The Cal Young neighborhood’s proximity to the University of Oregon is conducive to the emphasis put on education. The neighborhood is home to “The Fighting Irish” (Sheldon High School) and Cal Young Middle School. The 4J district allows students to enroll in schools outside their neighborhood, subject to a lottery system.

There are two elementary schools, Willagillespie Elementary School and Buena Vista Spanish Immersion Elementary School. Buena Vista is a bilingual school that includes both English and Spanish in their curriculum.  There are several day cares and preschools in Cal Young as well.

Beyond general schooling there are other facilities within the Cal Young neighborhood that offer education opportunities beyond the classic K-12 setup. Among these are Pepperberries Tools (a cooking school), Oregon Business College (real estate), and Ballet Northwest Academy.

Parks and Recreation

The Cal Young neighborhood is home to several parks and recreation centers, in addition to two golf courses. The area’s network of bike paths allows residents to quickly access other nearby attractions, such as the Valley River Center and Alton Baker Park.

Sheldon Community Center offers a number of services and recreational opportunities to local residents. The center’s indoor pool is open year-round and hosts daily water fitness courses. Established in 1899, Eugene Country Club is a private club that features tennis courts, a fitness center, a swimming pool and a nationally recognized golf course. The course came in at no. 85 in Golf Digest’s 2011-12 list of the top 100 golf courses in America.

With greens fees as low as $22 for 18 holes, Oakway Golf Course provides an affordable public option for the neighborhood’s residents. The par 61 course hosts events for men on Tuesdays, seniors on Wednesdays and women on Thursdays.

The neighborhood’s parks include Bond Lane City Park, Sheldon Sports Park, and Oakmont City Park. Also within walking or cycling distance of the neighborhood are Alton Baker Park and Delta Ponds City Park. These public areas offer access to trails, playgrounds, dog parks, sports fields and picnic tables.

Shopping

The Cal Young neighborhood is home to a variety of shopping centers and stores, the largest of which being the Oakway Center. The Oakway Center is home to an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and businesses including Bed Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn, Old Navy, and the Nike Store. Within the Oakway Center is Heritage Courtyard which provides shoppers a serene place to take a break from shopping.

The Cal Young neighborhood also has a variety grocery stores for their residents convenience. Large supermarkets like Albertsons and Safeway give residents a large selection of items while places like Trader Joe’s provide them with more specialized items.

Cal Young also features some quirky specialty stores. Shamrock Flowers and Gifts is a family owned company that specializes in floral arrangements. Woodcraft of Eugene sells beautiful works of art and offers woodworking classes to Cal Young residents.

In 2004, the City was awarded the Cooperative Conservation Initiative Vegetation Management Grant that covered $389,000 of the cost. This federal funding along with a matched contribution of approximately $289,000 and $100,000 in City Stormwater had made the restoration efforts possible.

The focus of the project was to remove invasive plant species and animals as well as clearing barriers that blocked the natural flow of water from the Willamette river.

The result is enhanced habitats for rare wildlife as well as an improvement for recreational sight seeing in this area.

Valley River Fire Station 9 offers public safety and emergency response to most of Lane County.

Lifetime Eye Care not only provides eye care services, but they also educate their clients ”about symptoms of vision problems which affect reading, learning, sports performance and much more”.

Marist High School provides college preparatory academic program that “effectively integrates intellectual, spiritual, social and physical student development”. It is one of the largest private catholic schools in Eugene.

Kendall Auto Group delivers an “unrivaled customer experience through highly motivated, knowledgeable and caring professionals”.
