I am very interested in what crimes are occurring throughout the world. That is why I chose to follow the crime beat on CNN’s homepage. The specific article I picked is, “Springer parents to spend years in prison,” and follows the case against parents Anthony and Marsha Springer in the death of their daughter, Calista.
Calista was killed in a house fire while chained to her bed and soon after the abuse she had been suffering from for years came out. This case has challenged the Californian Department of Social Services and their ability to provide a proper system for foster children.
I enjoyed this article because it was simple and to the point. The author Megan Haberling gives readers detailed background information and presents both sides of the case. Her words have a way of showing you just how monstrous these two parents really are. All of her articles surrounding this case have been informational yet simple. She provides questions of the day for all of her articles and leaves it for her readers to discuss among themselves. It increases awareness of the topic and interaction between her and her readers.
